Rachel must dig into the background of Samara Morgan when her son suffers from mysterious illnesses. Ruth asks Rachel Keller, an investigative journalist to find out the truth behind Katie's death. Rachel learns from her that Katie was in good health and that she found Katie's disfigured body inside the closet. Katie's friends inform Rachel about the myth that surrounds the cursed tape and how Katie's friend Becca was put in an institution due to Katie's tragic death. Katie's boyfriend and two of her closest acquaintances, also passed away in bizarre accidents that took place that same night around 10:30 PM. Rachel goes to Shelter Mountain Inn and stays in Cabin 12, which is the identical cabin that Katie and her friends were watching the videotape with the curse. Rachel finds the mysterious tape and starts watching it, following which her phone rings. Rachel hears a voice utter "seven days". Rachel is known as Noah Clay as a video analyst by her ex-boyfriend. Rachel finds out later that Aidan (her son who was with Noah) saw the tape and told her that he believed what she said. Rachel looks through the tape to find the lighthouse and discovers it is on Moesko Island. This was the home of Anna Morgan, an evil horse breeder who was cursed to be on the tape with the cursed name. After further investigation, Rachel discovers Anna had an adopted daughter, named Samara and she had the ability to burn disturbing images in the minds of individuals including animals, people and even objects. Rachel encounters Anna's widower Richard, but he makes her leave after she starts to inquire about Samara.
