Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from the family, so she was taken care of by her mother, grandmother and godparents. As a child Ford was diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive disorder and suffered anxiety linked to the word association. Ford was intrigued by the field of acting during her teen years, and was a part of the National Youth Theatre. Ford gained entry to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she was a poor fit there. Ford applied again to Central School of Speech and Drama and, on the fourth time she applied, she was finally admitted. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993 but, by that time, she had already made her debut on television in the 1991 season of Surgical Spirit; she adopted the professional name "Catherine Tate". Tate was featured in such television shows as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. Tate also performed regularly in the theatre, eventually joining with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. However, Tate quickly began gaining recognition for her stand-up comedic performances and added stand-up comedy to her show in 1996.
